Lining Up the Bride

Bride on Rightfrom Erin

Recently, brides have asked, “Do you know why I have to stand to the left of my fiancé?” Our honest response, “It has been the traditional way, but I’m not exactly sure why.”

It was time for a quick Google search!

The tradition stems from the groom needing to keep his right hand free in case he needed to defend his bride from any attackers. The groom’s right side was known as his sword arm and fighting hand. Apparently, when an officiant asked, “Is there anyone here who objects to the marriage of this man to this woman?” the answer wasn’t always polite silence!

In recent times, however, we have now seen the wedding ceremony line-up switched around. Sometimes, the bride needs to defend her groom!
