Creativity

We’ve been talking in the office this week about creativity.

With everything going on, it’s no wonder: David has been trying out new recipes in the kitchen. Gail has been pulling silk arrangements and antique vases from the stock room (making room for new catering supplies) and decorating the cabins. Elizabeth and I have been working on our bridal show displays. Chris has a book deadline looming over him, so he’s been writing up a storm.

It struck me how all of these things involve creativity.

I’m usually the person in the office who makes the trains run on time, so to speak. I’m the exacting one who pays attention to I’s and the T’s, making sure they’re all dotted and crossed. I make sure the numbers all add up. I’m a “left-brain” person.

So it amazes me a bit to watch creativity in action. As if by magic, beautiful, interesting things appear out of nowhere. David whips together something savory and delicious. Chris wrangles words onto a page to make a story. Elizabeth arranges a few plastic grapes and empty wine bottles into an eye-catching display.

Our vendors employ creativity, too: the photos they capture, the music they play, the cakes they bake, the flowers they arrange. I get to be around some of the most creative people in the region every day—I love it!

It struck me, though, that as businesspeople, they also have to be “left-brain” people like me—just as I have a bit of “right-brain” in me (I love to decorate the cabins with rose petals, candles and chocolates for our Romance Package—forming a heart in the middle of the bed with the petals!).

As we batted around all these different thoughts, Chris passed along a link for a piece he’d recently read: “Why Creative People Sometimes Make No Sense” by a fellow named Matthew Schuler. “This explains me,” Chris said, a little forebodingly. I wondered if I should be afraid, but it was actually pretty enlightening (not that I understand him any better!).

I’m curious now, though: What are some of the things that make YOU creative?
