The Man Stevenson Ridge is Named After

from Chris

I’ve been doing some additional research lately on Brig. Gen. Thomas Greeley Stevenson, the man for whom Stevenson Ridge is named. (More about that project soon!) He came from a privileged Boston family, and when the Civil War broke out, he was able to hand-pick his friends to form a regiment.

As part of my research, I came across these images of Stevenson. The one on the left comes from the Library of Congress. He looks like he’s ready to pop someone in the nose. The one on the right, from the Stevenson Ridge collection, makes him look a little grumpy.

If you’d like to know more about the story of how he got his start, and see some new photos of him we’ve been able to dig up, check out the post I wrote today for Emerging Civil War. I’ve also written here about his death at the battle of Spotsylvania Court House on May 10, 1864.
