Stevenson Ridge on C-SPAN

In case you missed this year’s Emerging Civil War Symposium at Stevenson Ridge, you can catch up on some of the speakers courtesy of C-SPAN. The public-access cable network taped many of the programs and has been airing them during its Saturday evening Civil War time slot.

Stevenson Ridge’s own historian-in-residence, Chris Mackowski, served as the emcee. He appears in each segment to offer introductions of the speakers.

So far, C-SPAN has aired three programs.

Keynote speaker Dana Shoaf “talked about the history of the bayonet as a weapon and how changes in gun technology affected its use and practicality during the U.S. Civil War,” C-SPAN’s website says.

Christopher Kolakowski “talked about the experiences of citizens during the fall of Richmond and the decisions by Confederate leaders that led to the surrender at Appomattox.”

The symposium also featured a Friday evening panel discussion that looked back at the Civil War’s sesquicentennial. “Public historians and authors talked about the obstacles and successes of remembering the Civil War on its 150th anniversary, and how it compared to earlier anniversary celebrations,” C-SPAN says. The panel also looked at recent events related to Confederate memory.

More segments will be airing in October, so stay tuned.

Also, tickets are on sale for next year’s symposium, which will be held August 5-7, 2016. Visit Emerging Civil War for details and to buy tickets at the early-bird price.
